Soma Birds Lagoon is situated at Thattekad near Kothamangalam in Ernakulam District,
Well nestled in the banks of mighty periyar river. It is about 60 kms away from Kochi and 65 kms away from Munnar by road. The nearest airport and railway stations are near Kochi, a two and half hour journey from here. Thattekad is well connected by road too. The Salim Ali bird sanctuary covers an area of 25 km. The literal meaning of thattekad is plain forest. It is an evergreen low land forest situated on the brances of Periyar river. The sanctuary have a rich and varied species of bird life. The bird sanctuary have a three storied watch tower, A few parts of forest is converted to teak and mahogony plantation.

The Soma birds lagoon is 10 kms from Bhoothathankettu dam built across Periyar at Edamalayar, Lower Periyar and Bhoothathankettu for hydroelectricity generation and irrigation purposes are located in the Kothamangalam taluk. Kothamangalamar, a small river which flows through the town goes to join Kaliyar and Thodupuzhayar to form the river Muvattupuzha which is the second largest river in Ernakulam district. Salim Ali Bird Santuary is 35 m to 523 m above sealevel. The normal tempreture is 35 degrees in summer and 16 degrees in winters.
